Surfing a file tree (Community Chat...)
I organise project files in file trees.
It tend to have many branches but not many files in each branch.
I want tips on how and with what program i can "surf" around in the file tree efficiently.
I use KDE.
For example I wish I could easily point at a folder and tell it to expand all in this folder to a tree structure.
Now if i could "fly around" with the mouse and the closest surrounding is "zoomed in with more detail" while things far away are more compact that would probably be nice.
... i have tried something like that before but i remember i found it very slow...

Adding Memory 2gb to 4gb, and what the system says it has (General Hardware...)
Hi All,
I just bought more ram for my desktop. I had 2gb, and added 2gb more. The motherboard does support 4gb. However, upon rebooting the computer, it only shows 3gb installed. I assume I need to install a different, or update my kernel? The question then, is how. Or should I do something else?

scanner's not working (General Hardware...)
Hi there,
I have an Epson Perfection 2480 PHOTO scanner that used to work very well in Mandriva 2006 and older Mandrake versions.
Since I upgraded to Mandriva 2007 and 2008 it isn't working anymore.
sane-find-scanner command gives the following output:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0121 [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:005:005
But neither scanimage -L nor Xsane are able to find the scanner.
Can anyone help me with this, please.

OpenVZ virtualisation (Community Chat...)
Has anyone got OpenVZ to work on Mandriva? If so can you share your wisdom?
There are lots of references to it in corporate server 4 press releases but there seems to be no documentation and very few tools, templates or metadata.
Thanks

Internet connection Wifi and Cable (Laptops...)
So I have tried like 5 distros of Linux and the only one that worked for me was PClinuxos but I want Mandriva cause I love the looks and the fact that Compiz fusion works for me with native drivers.
The problem is always Internetconnection. It doesnt work in Mandriva at all..cable or Wifi.
1. I cannot log on as root so how do I blacklist bcm43xx?
2. I have installed the wifi and got it to see the network but it cannot connect!!!
Wifi=Broadcom
Cable=Realtek RTL 8169/8110 Family gigabit ethernet
I have windowsdrivers for bot hof hem
I really love Linux but in the end the patience will not be there anymore ifnot basic stuff like an Internetconnection can work...sorry but that is just something that is way to basic to be this kind of messy, I know about open drivers and the Linux policy but if Linux should be a system for normal users it cant stay this hard....

Mandriva KDE works almost perfectly out of the box on this notebook dell sells with Ubuntu pre-installed. The exceptions are that the volume control buttons on the keyboard don't work and the mic has to be turn off or turned down in the volume control panel upon first boot otherwise you hear the internal fan playing in the speakers. After that sound plays great, wireless works better than ubuntu, and 3d desktop effects work right away.
Mandriva Gnome froze during install. May have been a bad copy though.

Acroread plug-ins (Community Chat...)
I have just installed MDV 2008, everything is fine, but I was trying to install additional plug-ins for acrobat reader.
I was able to install some, the others - like forms - can not be selected, due to wrong version of some lib file that is a part of acrobat reader package.
I'm going to download the package and force to install, but it would be nice to be able install packages using system installer.

USB devices - finding the ultimate explanation (Community Chat...)
Hi Everyone,
I see there are quite a few people still having problems with their USB devices. For many days I have been looking for a good guide to understand how things work. There are tons of posts and web pages and still things are not too simple.
Here are some links I have:
http://www.ma.utexas.edu/users/stirling/computergeek/usb.html
http://www.teaser.fr/~hfiguiere/linux/digicam.html
http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x498.html
http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/KB/HardwareHbits6
http://www.its.monash.edu.au/staff/systems/linux/technical/usb/usbmodify.html
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/mandriva-linux-help/24801-mandrake-10-1-wont-find-usb-devices.html
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/misc/47175-how-mount-mp3-player.html
I am using Mandriva 2007, I am also looking at 2008 problems before I go and upgrade.
I solved my USB problems recently, so maybe my hints will help people, especially newbies understand and solve their problems.
I should mention I do not use any graphical tool - too keep things simple. I can mount my devices as a user and read/write without any problems.
Open a console and be prepared to type in some commands.
Now, everytime a USB device is plugged in it is recognized by the system and this can be checked as root:
# [b:e774ab9ea2]fdisk -l [/b:e774ab9ea2]
You will see UBS devices as [b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdb, /dev/sdc[/b:e774ab9ea2], etc. Below is an example from my computer:
[i:e774ab9ea2][root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l
(additional info removed)
[b:e774ab9ea2]Disk /dev/sda[/b:e774ab9ea2]: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda5 2570 4739 17430493+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 4740 4864 1004031 82 Linux swap / Solaris
###### this is my 2GB MP3 Player
[b:e774ab9ea2]Disk /dev/sdb[/b:e774ab9ea2]: 2033 MB, 2033451008 bytes
###### this is my 500GB USB hard drive - 2 partitions
Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
[b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdc1[/b:e774ab9ea2] 1 31871 256003776 6 FAT16
[b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdc2 [/b:e774ab9ea2] 31872 60801 232380225 6 FAT16
[/i:e774ab9ea2]
My /etc/fstab entries are like this:
[i:e774ab9ea2][b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdb1[/b:e774ab9ea2] /mp3 vfat rw,noatime,user,noauto 0 0
[b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdc1[/b:e774ab9ea2] /d01 vfat iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,pamconsole,managed,rw 0 0
[b:e774ab9ea2]/dev/sdc2[/b:e774ab9ea2] /d02 vfat iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,pamconsole,managed,rw 0 0
[/i:e774ab9ea2]
The problem with the USB devices is that when I plug them in a different order I have to edit the /etc/fstab to change between /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. To avoid this I do the following:
- before starting the computer I plug in my MP3 Player - most often used
- I start my computer - USB hard drive is disconnected
- when my system is up I plug in my USB hard drive
- after I login I use a shell script to mount my devices:
[i:e774ab9ea2]mount /mp3
mount /d01
mount /d02
[/i:e774ab9ea2]
And that is all I need to do. This is a script I put in my $HOME/bin directory with 755 permissions. I also have a desktop shortcut to call that script. The important thing is I do not to mount devices before the system is started and I am logged in. When I login as a regular user and mount my drives, they are mounted in READ/WRITE.
Of course, this does not solve any problems like disconnecting the USB drive and connecting a camera memory card in the same USB port, because it may be a different device type, so another entry in the /etc/fstab would be needed. But my memory card reader is recognized by one of the entries like for my MP3 player.
In the end, it may be better to use the NOAUTO option in the /etc/fstab file every time. Still the USB device wil be recognized by the system - again use :
# fdisk -l
I don't know much about the UUID thing that we have now in Mandriva 2008, hopefully I will make an upgrade and see how this works.
I hope I could help some of you understand the idea and what is really going on.
Please feel free to add comments.
Regards,
Richard.

intalling mandriva 2008 32 bits on AMD64 machine (x86-64 Hardware...)
Hi all
I would like to upgrade my AMD64 box from2006 LE to 2008.
I am using 2006 X86_64 version at the moment but i would like to upgrade to a 32bits OS as i had much trouble with binary plugins (firefox,gimp...) which are not always availlable for 64 bits.
Further i did not notice any difference in speed running 64 bit version, just additional trouble...
There is only one 2008 DVD inclusing both 32 and 64 bits version.
I guess it will probably autodectect my CPU as 64 bits capable.
Is there any way to overcome this auto detection during install and force a 32bits OS?
Many thanks

Ok, let's start this again (Community Chat...)
I need a little history lesson and a bit of guidance here. Approximatly two years ago I picked up a set of CDs for Linux Mandrake 9.2. Still ahve them at home, but had some computer problems that I have been ironing out on the windows XP side. Now that I have managed to get XP setup and working well I can set about getting linux setup so that I can use that as well on a seperate PC. What happened to Mandrake, the web site talks about Mandravia, isn't that something different then Mandrake? What happened between 9.2 and the current version, 2008? Any issues surrounding using Mandravia on a 1ghz intel box? Was formally XP but will be Linux only?
Mandriva One 2008.0, ATI 9600XT+Compiz slow and other issues (3D Desktop...)
Hello,
It's my first time I install Mandriva.
I just installed Mandriva 2008 and I'm having a nightmare.
1- The display is very slow using compiz. I tried both driver fglrx and ati, but ati is even slower. glxinfo tells me that "direct rendering = no".
2- Klibido keeps crashing.
3- When clicking logout, the little window has only 1 option (End Session), how can I have all items (like Shutdown, Restart, etc...)
4- Firefox scrolling is very slow (could be related to compiz). Also fonts in Firefox for some vbulletin forums are unreadable.
5- Opening the menu takes 2-3 seconds (could be related to compiz again)
6- System in general is slow, Opening firefox takes up to 7-8 sec.
My system is a P4 3ghz with 512m ram
Please help me.
Thank you.

hello,
i'have already posted my question in http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=74026, but got a suggestin to post this question here, because I used a suggestion from http://archives.mandrivalinux.com/cooker/2007-10/msg00944.phpthread.
basicaly I want to build custom Mandriva One, which could boot without asking any questions about coutry user name and etc., and could play a full screen movie.
I described what I did in http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=74026,in detail.
The main problems is running draklive gives me an error package basesystem not found.
Why this could be?
Thanks for any suggestions

Almost Perfect! (Community Chat...)
I can't believe I avoided Mandriva for so long! It comes with compiz fusion (3d desktop effects), flash, and all the codecs pre-configured. And it's so fast! The only thing it's missing is the option to choose Gnome or KDE from the very start the way Fedora does or the option to download a Gnome configured version the way OpenSuse does. KDE is too crowded with graphical configuration applications that it takes ages to find the setting you want to change. Gnome is simplistic, intuitive, unique, and overall pleasant to use, but i haven't seen it implemented better than on OpenSuse. KDE aside, Mandriva's now my favorite OS. Goodbye headacheubuntu!!!!
no supported CD/DVD-Recorder found on this target. (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)
Hello,
I am running 2007.1 and have in the past been able to burn CD's. I downloaded 2008.0 last night and now when I try to burn the DVD the GUI gives me only the "Write disk to file image" option. I tried to burn a CD and get the same results. trying it through cdrecord I get the error in the subject of this post. With the scan bus option I see my writer on 0,0,0. I have been keeping the system updated. That's the only change I have made to my computer I can think of.
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Users can't access FAT partitions (Community Chat...)
I'm sorry to bother you. I installed MDV2008.0, and OpenOffice 2.3.0 from Sun's website.
I'm a fairly advanced user, but in the past, messing with /etc/fstab has broken many things for me (supermount three years ago, other stuff since then).
So I need your help.
I keep my documents, spreadsheets, etc. on a FAT partition so Windows can access them. When I try to access /mnt/win_d, OO gives me the message "access to /mnt was denied".
I logged in as root and typed "drakconf" at a text screen. I cleared the option to "give read-only access to regular users" for all non-linux partitions. Didn't help things. As confirmation, here are various lines from /etc/fstab:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/hd6 /mnt/win_e ntfs nls=utf8 0 0
The docs and spreadsheets are on win_d. The error message might occur on other windoze partitions, I haven't tried to access them yet.
Where is the problem? I've looked in OO, and AFAICT I did not set any "open as read-only" option there. I suspect the problem is the way I set up Mandriva.
But I've broken Mandriva so badly in the past, I just can't risk it again.
BTW, I tried to open a JPEG with Gwenview. Its "file open" dialog box simply doesn't list anything under /mnt (as a regular user). Not even directories.
I'm just tired of messing up Mandriva. Any help is greatly appreciated.
